Mexican Mocha Recipe: The Ultimate Cozy Drink
Last year, I went to an old friend’s house where she served me a traditional coffee that was more adventurous than my usual latte or cappuccino. The drink was called the Mexican Mocha, which is so tasty, rich, creamy, chocolatey, and also contains flavour of warm spices. Today I will guide you through the whole recipe for this spicy drink.

However, it’s a fusion coffee recipe, moreover is perfect for a cozy morning or evening. Whenever you want you can try this comforting drink. Trust me, this mocha drink definitely gives you a different taste than your regular coffee.
What Is a Mexican Mocha?
Mexican mocha coffee is also well known as Mexican hot chocolate with coffee, because this coffee drink is inspired by traditional Mexican hot chocolate. As we know, a regular mocha is made with espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate, however, in this Mexican version of mocha, we also add warm spices like cinnamon or nutmeg and a piece of cayenne pepper.
This combination will give you the unique result of a drink that is not only sweet but also spicy and bold. While cinnamon provides a comforting depth, cayenne pepper provides a subtle aroma that lingers after each sip. When you mix it with rich chocolate and strong coffee, the result is a cup of pure nectar.
Ingredients
Coffee or Espresso:
As well as regular mocha we need coffee or espresso in this recipe too. If you have an espresso machine then make 1–2 shots of espresso or if you don’t have any espresso machine just check out our recipe on how to make espresso without machine. However if you are going to use brewed coffee then you should make it strong enough.
Milk:
We also need to use a cup of milk in this mocha recipe. However, you can use dairy or non-dairy milk, as you want. For non-dairy options, you can use oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or even coconut milk.
Cocoa Powder:
Cocoa powder gives your mocha its deep chocolate base. It’s what transforms a regular coffee into a mocha. By using unsweetened cocoa powder you can control the sweetness. Whereas you can also use high quality dark chocolate as an alternative, which creates a more indulgent, dessert-like version.

Sugar:
We also use sugar in this recipe, it will balance out the bitterness which came from the coffee and cocoa powder. This makes the flavors more concentrated and makes the drink smooth and appealing.
Without adding any sweetener, your mocha may taste too sour or acidic. So you have to use the right amount of sugar to balance the spicy, bitter, and chocolatey notes. However, if you don’t want to use artificial sugar, you can also use honey, agave, or maple syrup as an alternative to sugar.
Ground Cinnamon:
The key spice in this coffee drink is cinnamon, which adds warmth, aroma and comforting sweetness without extra sugar. So many people think of this ingredient as essential for Mexican mocha flavor.
Cayenne Pepper:
Cayenne is an optional ingredient; however, I recommend you to use that because it provides you with an authentic flavor and adds a subtle, lingering heat that makes this mocha unique and exciting. It doesn’t make the drink as spicy as chili, just gives a pleasant warmth at the end of each sip.
Ground Nutmeg:
The ground nutmeg also adds a layer of warmth and spice. However, it’s also an optional ingredient. It just gives your drink an extra taste of aromatic and luxurious flavor.
Topping:
For the topping, I am going to use whipped cream. You can also use cinnamon powder or cocoa powder on top. It will balance the intensity of the coffee and spice and also provide you a smooth first sip every time.
Garnish:
A good presentation will provide your drink an appealing look. So for garnish you can use chocolate shaving or even cinnamon sticks. If you use chocolate shavings, they will melt slowly; on the other hand, if you use cinnamon sticks, it will add flavor as you stir your drink with it.

Step-by-Step Instructions Mexican Mocha Coffee

Now it is time to share with you the process of making this unique Mexican mocha. I have broken them into simple steps so you can make this at home.
Step 1: Brew the Coffee
First of all we need to prepare our base coffee or espresso shot. Remember if you’re going with coffee then make it strong enough. Because the strength of coffee is important. And lastly I would like to say try to use freshly ground coffee.
Step 2: Heat the Milk
After preparing our base coffee we need to warm the milk we are going to use in this recipe. Just take a small saucepan, pour the milk in it and heat the milk over medium heat. We don’t need to boil it, so just warm it until it’s steaming. However, if you have a milk frother then must use it, by this you will get a creamy, foamy texture.
Step 3: Mix the Chocolate and Spices
Now we need to add the chocolate and spices into the milk and create a mixture. Add cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, pepper, and nutmeg to the hot milk. After that you need to stir it continuously until the mixture is smooth and the cocoa powder is fully dissolved. If you want, you can adjust the sweetness or spice level to your taste.
Step 4: Combine Coffee and Chocolate Mixture
At this time, take a large mug and pour the brewed coffee or espresso into the mug. After that, slowly pour the spiced chocolate milk mixture into your coffee or espresso, then stir it to combine.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
Now garnishing time, add whipped cream on top then add a sprinkle of cinnamon, or even chocolate shavings. After that add a cinnamon stick for stirring. Now sip it and enjoy your warm, spiced Mexican coffee drink immediately.
