This iced coffee is an incredibly refreshing and delicious coffee drink I can’t seem to stop making. It’s faster to make than cold brew, much tastier than regular iced coffee, and also unique.

So in this guide, you will learn exactly everything about this Japanese iced coffee; what it is, why it tastes different, which is the best beans you can use, and how to make this drink at home in an easy way.

What Is Japanese Iced Coffee?

Japanese iced coffee, as I told you, it’s also known as flash brew. It’s basically a brewing method where hot coffee is poured directly over ice. When the hot coffee drips over the ice, it cools instantly. This significant cooling process locks in the natural flavours and fragrance of coffee, which you can’t get from freshly brewed hot coffee.

The process for making this drink is very different from cold brew, which slowly extracts coffee with cold water over many hours. Whereas Cold brew provides you a smooth but heavy taste. On the other hand, Japanese iced coffee will provide you with the freshness of hot coffee and the sour taste of an iced drink.

Why Japanese Iced Coffee Tastes So Good

This unique iced coffee is not only a cup of coffee, it feels like a cup of bright taste and refreshing and it’s almost like the coffee version of iced tea. However, the real magic behind this iced coffee is hidden in the three things:

Instant Cooling Locks in Aroma

Normally, when we make coffee, the aroma of coffee begins to fade fast when it cools slowly. On the other hand when we pour hot coffee directly over ice, the temperature drops instantly. And this instant cooling process preserves the delicate floral and fruity notes, which generally disappear in our traditional cooling methods.

Perfect Balance of Strength

Because the ice melts while brewing, you have the power to adjust the coffee and water ratio. As a result you can get a final cup, which is not watered down. This is the main thing which also ensures that your drink stays flavorful and full-bodied.

Fresh and Vibrant Flavor

This coffee also provides various kinds of notes. For example, if you enjoy coffees with citrus, berry, floral, or tea-like notes, then I can tell you that this iced coffee will highlight all of them beautifully. It is also well known as it’s clean, refreshing and also elegant.

What You Need to Make Japanese Iced Coffee at Home

The great thing is that you just need a few ingredients and basic equipment to make this drink at home. You don’t need any high budget coffee maker or fancy equipment. Here’s what you need:

  • Fresh coffee beans
  • A kettle or stovetop
  • A dripper or any pour-over maker
  • Hot water
  • Ice
  • A glass or carafe

Step 1: Prepare Your Ice

First of all, take a large glass or carafe and place around 100 grams of ice cubes into it. This ice cube will melt and will be a part of the final drink.

Step 2: Heat Your Water

We need to use hot water to make this drink. So heat the water you are going to use at 92–96°C (198–205°F). I recommend this temperature because it will bring out the best flavour of coffee. By the way, we need to take almost 200 grams of water.

Step 3: Grind Your Coffee

If we use freshly ground coffee beans, this will provide the best flavor. However, we need 20 grams of coffee. So grind the coffee beans to a medium fine texture which is similar to table salt. It will help extract flavor quickly.

Step 4: Bloom the Coffee

Now the final play begins. Pour your ground coffee into your dripper and then a small amount of hot water like around 40-50 g to bloom. And after that, we need to let it sit for around 30 seconds. This will allow CO₂ to escape and also improves the flavor of coffee.

Step 5: Pour in Circles

Now we need to pour all the hot water gently in slow circles. We use 200 grams of hot water. However, as the coffee drips we can see the ice melt rapidly. This is the flash brewing.

Step 6: Swirl and Serve

Finally, we need to give a gentle swirl to the container to mix the melted ice and freshly brewed coffee. Pour it over fresh ice in a glass, and the most interesting Japanese iced coffee is ready.

Use freshly roasted beans

I recommend you use the best fresh coffee beans because good quality and freshly roasted coffee beans will give a more vibrant flavor to your Japanese iced coffee drink.

Don’t skip the ice ratio

The fact is if you use too much ice, then the drink becomes watery and also weak. So, I recommend you to always try to maintain the ice ratio.

Pour slowly

The pouring process will need to be slow and this process will help extract the right flavours of coffee beans.

Experiment with flavors

I always recommend you to do some experiments with flavours like you can add some orange peel or a cinnamon stick, or even a splash of milk. However, many people prefer it black because the flavor is so clean.
