This coffee is well known for its old brewing method, which is also thought to be one of the oldest methods in the world. This drink is getting famous for its unique preparation and bold, rich flavor with a foamy top. But mastering this coffee-making takes some practice and time.

In this article, I will guide you to learn everything about Turkish coffee, from ingredients to tools. I will also provide step-by-step guidelines for making a perfect cup of Turkish coffee. The good news is you can make it at home without any expensive equipment.

What Makes Turkish Coffee Special?

Turkish coffee is not like other brewing methods and is unfiltered. In fact, the coffee grounds remain in the cup, settling to the bottom when you drink. And that provides the drink an intense flavor, with creamy texture and a strong aroma, which you cannot find in regular drip or espresso machines.

When you try this Turkish coffee in cafes in Turkey, you will notice that the highest compliment is a cup with thick, silky foam on top. This also makes this traditional coffee more unique. And I must say the taste of this coffee is outstanding and also unique.

Ingredients You Will Need

Making this Turkish coffee in your home is not so hard, you just need some basic ingredients for this:

  • Finely ground Turkish coffee
  • Cold water
  • Sugar

Measurement of Ingredients

The ratio is very simple. If you are going to make one cup of coffee, then you need to use one heaped teaspoon of coffee and one Turkish coffee cup of cold water. However, sugar is an optional ingredient, so use it to your taste.

Essential Tools for Turkish Coffee

Don’t worry about using so many tools, you just need only two things and you must need to use these. One is Cezve and the other one is turkish coffee cup and there is no alternative to these two items:

Cezve

Cezve is also known as Ibrik. It is a small pot with a long handle, which is usually made of copper or sometimes with stainless steel. The benefits of using this pot are that it helps you control the heat and gives you traditional-style Turkish coffee.

Turkish Coffee Cup

A Turkish coffee cup is a kind of small cup which can contain around 60-70 ml of coffee. These kinds of cups will help you to measure the water and serve the coffee with the correct portion.

Now let’s go for the step-by-step guidelines for making this Turkish coffee. By learning these steps you can make this coffee in an authentic way.

Step 1: Measure the Water

First you have to take your Turkish coffee cup and fill it with cold water. Then pour this water into the cezve. I recommend using cold water, trust me it will create better foam and also improves flavor extraction.

Step 2: Add the Coffee to the Cezve

In the second stage we need to add the ground coffee. For making this Turkish coffee you need to use one heaped teaspoon of finely ground Turkish coffee for one cup of water. However, if you want to make your coffee stronger, then you can add a little extra.

Step 3: Add Sugar

This step is fully optional and depends on your preference. However, the traditional Turkish coffee is served in different levels of sweetness:

  • Sade (no sugar)
  • Az şekerli (little sugar)
  • Orta şekerli (medium sugar)
  • Şekerli (sweet)

By the way, I recommend that if you want sweetness in your coffee, then add some sugar before heating. And heat will melt the sugar naturally.

Step 4: Stir Gently Before Heating

Now in this step you need to stir the coffee, sugar, and water together until everything melts. After this gentle stir we don’t need to stir it again in the process. Just put it to rest while the mixture sits for a few seconds.

Step 5: Heat the Coffee Slowly

Now the most interesting step begins. You need to place the cezve on low heat. A traditional Turkish coffee is made by providing heat slowly, by doing this the foam forms gradually. As the coffee warms up, tiny bubbles appear around the edges. You must do this process patiently.

Step 6: Allow the Foam to Rise

When the coffee gets hot you will notice a thick foam will rise to the top. You don’t need to boil it. In fact, when the foam reaches near the rim, you need to remove the cezve from heat.

Now use a spoon to gently scoop the foam into your coffee cup. This foam makes your Turkish coffee more authentic and professional.

Step 7: Return the Cezve to Heat

Now you have to do this heating process again. Just place the cezve back on low heat and let the coffee rise again slowly after that take it out from the heat again. This two-stage heating process provides you a deeply flavored Turkish coffee with characteristic crema on the top.

Step 8: Serve Carefully

The Turkish coffee is ready. Now take your Turkish coffee cup and pour the coffee gently into the cup. Remember to allow the foam to stay on top. You don’t need to stir because the grounds will be settled at the bottom in a few minutes. Enjoy it immediately while it is hot.
