I bought the Red Velvet Cake color and was excited to try this machine. After trying it, I learned some positive things and some things that can be improved.
Things I Liked About This Machine
Breville Smart Grinder Pro seemed amazing to look at. It was also pretty lightweight to lift. I wanted to do a demo test at first. As the higher number of the burr settings indicates coarse grinding and the lowest number indicates fine grinding, I choose the lowest number for fine grinding.
So, to grind the beans, I poured some beans into the hopper and chose the finer grinding option. The grind size was displayed on the LCD screen. Besides these, the timing and the shot number also showed up on this screen that I had selected.
Then, I placed a cup to collect the grinds and started the machine. The grinds were finely ground. For the second try, I manually set the conical grind burr to 2. After that, I again set the time and number of shots. This time, I attached the large portafilter holder and then attached a portafilter. After that, I started the machine.
This time, the result was also satisfactory. For two cups of shots, it took 12 seconds to grind the coffee beans. I also tested the French press, where the grinds were coarser. So, I set the grind size and other things, then started the machine. About this setting, I’ve discussed it in the next section.
Now, it was time to taste the espresso. I brewed espresso after every grinding process, and the flavors were delicious: chocolatey and a bit bitter. The shots also produced a good crema, along with the aroma.
Another plus point is that the machine enters standby mode after some time. That technically saves some energy even if it’s less in amount. It’s a positive side.
Things The Brand Can Work On
I have a few things to discuss in this section. This machine is perfect overall, but some things might need improvement. So, the first one is the noise. Yes, it does produce noise that can be annoying for some people. I also felt slightly disturbed when I tried it for the third time.
The second issue is with the grind size. It performs really well when it is set to grind the beans finely. But during coarse grinding, it didn’t perform as well as fine grinding.
The third one is that it retains some coffee grounds and is not suitable for Turkish coffee.
Also, after grinding, it left a few clumps. So, before brewing, you have to get rid of those clumps for a good shot of espresso.
Cleaning Process
Cleaning can be a little bit complex since all things you have to do manually. The hopper is removable. So, by removing the hopper, you need to clean any leftover beans.
A damp cloth can be used to wipe out any leftovers inside the hopper. Burrs also need to be cleaned. By using a brush, you can easily brush out any buildup but do not use water or damp cloth to clean the burrs.
However, a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle can be used instead of a brush. The grind chute should not be overlooked. It should be cleaned every 2-4 weeks for better performance.
A toothpick can be used to clean the area from where the grounds exit. After a couple of months to deep clean the machine, you can use grinder tablets. So, all these things are a little bit complicated to clean.
